Photo Collection: Carter Collection (1 of 2)

Description

This first group of photos from the Carter Collection, features candid shots of individual or small groups of personnel around the atoll during its World War 2 naval occupation.

James R. Carter was a Naval Photographer's Assistant, stationed on Palmyra during World War 2. Born in 1925, Carter tried twice to enlist but was denied for falsifying his age. Once he turned 17, with his parents written approval, he joined the war effort, and was assigned to the Palmyra Atoll Naval Station as a photographer's assistant.

After the war, James took home many of the film negatives from his photographic work on Palmyra. This rare and intimate collection includes a variety of candid shots, giving a unique look into the daily life of personnel on the atoll from 1942 to 1944.
